Pressure Equipment Directive PED

The Pressure Equipment Directive PED 2014 68 EU covers the design, manufacture and conformity assessment of pressure equipment intended for the European market. Equipment falling within the scope of the directive must meet the essential safety requirements and carry CE marking where required. Classification under PED depends on maximum allowable pressure, internal volume or nominal size, fluid group and equipment type. CE marking shown on an instrument may relate to other European directives such as EMC, RoHS, ATEX or similar regulatory requirements rather than PED.

Pressure Gauges
Pressure gauges are generally considered pressure accessories under PED. Due to their very small internal volume, most gauges are classified according to Article 4 paragraph 3 as Sound Engineering Practice SEP. Equipment classified as SEP must be designed and manufactured in accordance with good engineering practice but must not carry CE marking under PED. Where PED classification requires it, CE marking and a Declaration of Conformity can be supplied.

Pressure Gauges with Diaphragm Seals
Pressure gauges supplied with diaphragm seals are normally assessed as pressure accessories or assemblies under PED. In many applications these remain classified as SEP due to small internal volume, however classification must always be confirmed based on operating pressure, fluid group and application conditions. Supporting documentation can be provided where required for integration into the final pressure system.

Pressure Switches
Pressure switches are assessed under PED according to their pressure rating, internal volume and fluid group. Depending on these factors they may fall under SEP or a PED category requiring CE marking and conformity assessment. Temperature switches that do not form part of a pressurised boundary are generally outside the scope of PED.

Thermowells
Thermowells are typically regarded as components of pressure equipment rather than standalone pressure equipment under PED. They are therefore normally supplied without CE marking. Material certification, test documentation and supporting technical information can be provided to assist incorporation into pressure equipment which may itself require PED conformity assessment.
